Opinions and Present Moment Experience

Camellia copy

Many Greetings Dear Ones,

We want to wish you a cheerful and uplifting change of seasons yet again. Depending upon your physical location, you may be noticing the shift, or merely anticipating it. But shifting has begun. Whether or not you appreciate and/or celebrate this shift is perhaps a matter of personal opinion. We want to offer you – what else? – a word or two of advice.

First advice: Choose your opinions with awareness. What you experience – and even what you merely perceive – will depend in great part upon your opinion of things. Opinions are always a choice, and therefore you can alter your experience by what and how you choose to perceive in it.

Try this: look at an image. A photo, a painting, or just out the window. Pay attention to any aspect of it, the light, the color, the forms and shapes, the depth of field, etc. Then notice your opinion. Do you have a belief that this aspect is good? Bad? Indifferent? (Yes indifference is an opinion…). For instance, is the light appealing, does it please you? Or is it not to your liking, it bothers you? Or is it of no consequence particularly, not of interest? (Note how this feels in your body and in your mind.) Any of these can be shifted to any other of these, try it! Or – if you want to take off the training wheels – it can all be discarded in favor of a simple, open awareness, a light touch of appreciation for the fact of light and of vision, ultimately with very little opinion involved. How do you feel in your body-mind now? (Note: if vision is not available to you, use any other sense, that of touch, or hearing, taste, smell, any sensation or input will do.)

Second piece of advice: Stay in the present moment as best you can. There are times, of course, when much is in motion, and it can be hard to stay put, always wanting to go forward or backward to have a sense of solidity and control. There’s not much to control on the present moment. There’s nothing to control anywhere else. But staying present with your experience, and playing around with your opinions about what is happening in your world will inevitably bring more peace to you than any other place you can go. And, after all, here and now is really where it’s at. Right?

Isn’t it interesting being human?

Much Love and Many Blessings,
