Dear ones,
I have been trying to write this letter for quite a while, over many pages. Trying to find the balance between everything I want to say and keeping it brief. (I tried. I can’t keep it brief.)
As a person and a business owner I want to make it clear that Black Lives Matter to me. My business strives to be inclusive and safe for all my clients. Sometimes we need to be particularly vocal about such things. As I read messages from other businesses in support of Black Lives Matter and the recent protests, I realized I needed to take a professional stand, that doing antiracism work in my personal world is not enough.
We all need to know who we can trust, and how much or little. You all give me a lot of trust, and I want you to know it is not misplaced. Not addressing this issue explicitly conveys complicity. It’s a mark of my privilege as a white person that I get to choose whether to speak or not. I choose to speak.
(Note to white people – privilege is not a dirty word. It is a fact. Everyone has some kinds of privilege. White people can make use of our white privilege and leverage it in service to our antiracist ideals. It’s actually pretty awesome to turn the tables on the white supremacist patriarchy that way. More on that later.)
Saying Black Lives Matter and demonstrating it are two very different things. Here are my current action steps (I am open to suggestions for other steps):
Any Person of Color who wants a free channeled reading and/or Bach flower consultation from me can have one. If you know anyone this might apply to, or you would like your free reading, just email me and we will set it up.
I will continue to donate a portion of my income to supporting Black women’s voices through their Patreon accounts. If someone has been speaking to you, find them on Patreon and pledge something. Even $5/month can add up for people who are doing this labor.
Anyone who has questions about how white people can do antiracism work can contact me, and I will help steer you to resources for your education and actions. I will not judge your questions. I will share some of my experience from decades of work, and help you wrap your head around this huge and overwhelming subject. I will ask you for a donation for this, that you make to organizations or individuals working for racial justice and equity (suggestion list available).
I am working on some writings, primarily aimed at helping white people who are just waking up to the reality of the racism in our country. I have a lot of information and experience to share, and my background as a psychotherapist and activist to draw on. It takes inner work as well as information to be able to tolerate the discomfort that comes with actively confronting racism as a white person. When we can tolerate that, we can become effective at unlearning and dismantling racism. I’ll keep you posted on where these writings will be available.
I am considering starting a group for white folks who want to explore and address questions of racism and justice. I encourage you to find folks to start your own group with in the meantime. Just grab a reading list (try White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo) and start talking, watch a movie (try 13th on Netflix) or two and start talking, listen to some podcasts (try 1619 Project) and start talking. White people have to start talking about this stuff. Here’s a post about things white people can do. There are many such lists. Do the Google.
Thank you all for reading this. I chose to focus on actions rather than explaining things you can find out elsewhere (and presumably have). I hope you find it useful and reassuring and invigorating. I hope you join me in finding actions of your own to take, small or large or anywhere in between. I know it’s not the perfect letter (it’s late, I’m tired), but maybe it’s the good enough letter for now.
If by some chance you find this annoying or it pisses you off or you want to say All Lives Matter, feel free to let me know and/or unsubscribe (link at the bottom). May you find a healing place that truly meets your needs.
With love and guarded optimism,
Ker
PS. Once again, I’m getting this newsletter out a little late for signing up for the Channeling Gathering this Friday (6/12) at 7pm PST. Oops. Info below.
Also – I’m extending the 20-minute Special Channeling Offer for Difficult Times until further notice. It seems to be needed and useful for folks. Pay from the Heart basis, as explained on the scheduling page here.
